How CIF Price Is Calculated

CIF Formula

CIF = FOB + ocean freight + marine insurance. Insurance is calculated on 110% of the CIF value, per Incoterms® 2020.

Who pays what under CIF

The seller pays freight and insurance to the destination port. Risk transfers to the buyer once goods are loaded on board at origin.

Insurance (110% convention)

The premium is charged on 110% of the CIF value, so the insured amount includes your expected profit. Rates vary with the route, the cargo, and the cover you buy — use the rate your insurer quotes you.

Profit margin

Selling price = cost ÷ (1 − margin). A 20% margin means profit is 20% of the selling price, not 20% markup on cost.

How to Use the CIF Calculator

Enter the FOB unit cost, your order quantity, the ocean freight total, the insurance rate, and your target profit margin. The calculator returns the CIF price per unit and the shipment total, and breaks out how much of that price is freight and how much is insurance. The formulas behind it are written out on the methodology page. If you want the same calculator on your own site, the embed page has a copy-ready snippet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CIF in export pricing?

CIF means the seller covers the cost of goods, marine insurance, and ocean freight to the destination port. It is common when the seller has better freight rates than the buyer.

How is insurance calculated on a CIF quote?

Insurance is typically calculated on 110% of the CIF value, covering the invoice value plus a 10% buffer for expected profit. This calculator applies the same rule.

How do I estimate ocean freight?

Ask your freight forwarder for a current rate per container or per cubic meter for your destination. For planning, the calculator accepts your best estimate and you can refine it before sending a quote.

Is it better to quote FOB or CIF?

Quote FOB when the buyer has their own freight arrangements or forwarder. Quote CIF when you can secure better freight rates and want to control the total landed cost picture.

Does the calculator include customs duty?

No. Customs duty at destination is paid by the buyer and depends on the HS code and local tariff. Use the landed cost calculator for the full picture.
